T3 Timeline supplement: Biblical Evidence of the 7 Sacraments
Prayer
Introduction:
· Great Myth – the Seven Sacraments are not in the bible
o “Sacrament” comes from latin Sacramentum which means “covenant” and “covenant” is in the bible.
o The bible does not NAME all Seven sacraments but gives passages where Jesus institutes each of them along with Old Testament support – ie. God was ALWAYS telling us of the sacraments in more childlike terms until Jesus came and the Holy Spirit through the Catholic Church after Jesus left continued to clarify them.
· 3 pillars of Catholic Church’s Teaching Authority about God:
(analogy of the balance of powers in US government)
1. Sacred Scripture = The Bible -- written and canonized (made official) by the Catholic Church through the Holy Spirit. But they need some interpretation. Problem: Who decides what books are part of the Bible?
2. Sacred Tradition – what allows us to continue on the path set by Christ and not wander off into our own ideas of “what it should be.” Thus, what traditions were true in time of Jesus and the early church are STILL True today.
Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition are both sources of God’s revelation.
3. Catholic Church Magisterium–Church is directed by Magisterium (Pope and Bishops) who are our guides to Scripture and keep up the Sacred Traditions.
· The need to adhere to both Scripture and Tradition is biblical: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15).
