Religious Education:  2008-09  Grade 10-11

T3: The Teen Timeline Bible Study:  Lesson 1,  October 22, 2008,   7:30-9:00 PM

I.  Opening prayer as a full group (5 min) – may use prayer in Leaders guide

II.  Introduction:  (10 min)  Page 2 in Teen Study Kit

A.  Verse to rememberHave some one read it from the lectern:  1 Peter 1: 9  “8 Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9 as you attain the goal of [your] faith, the salvation of your souls.”

B.  What we are doing overall – We are going to learn how to read the Bible to make it make sense by first taking the forest view – understanding the scope of it all – then looking at some of the particulars.  Make it less difficult.  We will be using a system called T3 Teen Timeline.  Look in your packet – Bookmark (compact), Color Timeline (detail), Beads (color only as reminder).  Expect to bring this book to every class and NAB Bible (order form if needed).

            C.  Time Period Covered today  -- Introduction overview to the Bible

            D.  Where are we on our Journey – Introduction to Bible 73 books (46 Old and 27 New Testament) – only 14 books are historically unique or narrative (Teen study kit - Insert after p 30;  Leaders Guide p.103, 105-106) – Looking at these 14 you get the overall forest view and scaffold of where to put everything else in time of salvation history.

Additional Questions (numbers match above):

1.    What struck you most in the DVD segment today?  What did you think about Mark Hart’s description of the Mass experience – getting up Sunday morning, racing to church, the organ sounding, the readings that seem obscure … “Thanks be to God [that that is over!]” – the homily… let it be short, following along the homily then getting lost… mind wandering

2.    What has your Sunday school experience been like to date?  Did his description seem familiar?  -- cotton ball lamb of God, noah and giraffe, lack of correlation or organization of Bible stories and meaning.--- never connecting the dots.  Being older but not wiser  / not more mature in faith.  Childlike vs childish.

3.    What do you think about the Catholic Churches expectation that you read the Sunday readings BEFORE church?  How do you find them?  -- missellette or liturgical cycle p. 39 of student book – just need to know what year you are in for the cycle A, B, or C.  What about reading the Bible daily?  Star Wars analogy – walking into the movie / story in the middle makes it hard to know what is going on.

4.    Many books grouped into types of literature.  Reading the bible cover to cover – don’t try this at home! – it isn’t organized to be read this way.

5.    Skiing analogy.  Only wrong way to read scripture is to NOT read it.  What do you think about the Bible being the “Word of God” and not just “Words about God?”  Do you believe this?  What does this mean to you?

6.    14 books read in order give the full story (other 59 books are supplemental).  ITUNES analogy of different song groupings.  What do you think about the color method of learning the Bible?  “With great power comes great responsibility.” Quote from Spiderman the movie.  What do you think about learning the bible and using your gifts (any and all) in service to God?

7.    Look at the colors and reason for choice of color corresponding with the time in salvation history.  Teen kit bookmark , Leader p.105-106.  Turqoise: earth from space –creation, Burgandy:  blood of patriarchs, blood of covenant with Abraham, Red:  Red Sea with Moses, Tan:  desert wanderings, Green:  green hills of Canaan now out of the desert, Purple:  royal kingdom of David, Black: Divided kingdom the dark years, Blue: singing the blues in exile, Yellow:  brighter days returning to Israel after Exile, Orange:  fire in lamps of purified temple, Gold:  gifts of the Magi - Gospels, White:  bride of Christ – the Church.

8.    We have a God that loves us so much that he would rather die then risk spending eternity without YOU!  How does that strike you?  He gave us a written tradition in Scripture and oral tradition in our Church to learn of Him.  How do you feel about this?  Do the stories speak “to” or “about” you?  What do you think about looking at the face of Christ?  Can you face Him or do you have to look away?  Cycle of sin / reconciliation.  Word is a seed – heart hardened and let God chip away at the hard dirt to get at the good soil beneath to let the seed grow.

9.    What do you think about quoting scripture vs understanding scripture?  Head knowledge vs. heart knowledge.    Remember it is about the “WHY is this happening.”  Quotation:  1 Peter 1:9 :  “…as you attain the goal of [your] faith, the salvation of souls.”  Wants all people (His children) to be with Him in heaven.  What do you think about letting the Holy Spirit do His work?  Are you willing to let Him.  Are you willing to put yourself in a position to let Him work through you?  We are all in this together!
